| UNTITLED From the very first meeting of the CMP board, (I was vice chair and two years later became chair) we hoped and dreamed of success. Our primary objective was to develop a program that would inspire members of the meeting planning profession to aspire to greater knowledge and prestige in their industry. I believe we achieved that objective. A look at the numbers of CMPs is the answer. Certified Meeting Professionals today are looked upon by their peers, as well as those who have perhaps not achieved the status, as having attained a level of expertise and knowledge that enables them to go to the negotiating table or to the conference table in their organization with greater confidence that they will be able to negotiate more successfully. Having a CMP on each side of the negotiating table enables both to converse with the assurance that each knows how to achieve the best outcome for both parties. The CMP designation is not to be taken lightly. It has achieved the status in the meetings and conventions industry that we had hoped as we toiled to make it the best certification program in our industry. We knew that “value” would not happen in the first few years, but we felt sure that it would become a valued mark of professionalism in years to come. Having value? Just look at the meeting professionals who sat for that first exam. Jim Jones, Howard Fieretag, Rudy Wright, - all leaders in the industry. They, who had already achieved status, thought this would help them even more. There were others, whose names I cannot now recall, but the list of about 30 was most impressive. I was the proctor for that first exam. The designation helped me by enabling me to negotiate more successfully both inside and outside my organization. It has made a great difference in interaction with peers and subordinates. The CMP designation and the process by which it is earned has certainly
raised the bar and increased the stature of those who have studied hard
and sweated through the exam.
