The Convention Industry Council today announced the 2013-2014 leadership of the CMP Board. Made up of representatives from CIC member organizations and international and academic liaisons, the CMP Board represents the profession's diversity and serves as a voice for stakeholders who have an interest in maintaining high professional standards and advancing the art and science of professional meeting management.

Melody Kebe, CMP, CGMP, past president of the Society of Government Meeting Professionals assumed the role of Board Chair. Kebe is Chief of the Management Support Division within the Network Services Directorate, Defense Information Systems Agency.

“My primary goal is to continue the great work and forward thinking about the future of the CMP Program that my predecessors accomplished during their tenures,” said Kebe. “In addition to continuing the projects outlined in the board’s strategic framework, my focus will also include increasing the visibility of the CMP board inside the organizations that board members represent, creating stronger collaboration and resource sharing, and ensuring that the board participation offers a high return on investment.”

With over 40 years of experience working for the federal government, Kebe serves as the Directorate’s Conference Liaison for the Agency-wide Annual Customer and Industry Forum, attended by over 3,000 representatives from the Military Services, Government Agencies & Private Industry, where she supervises 25 staff members who provide day-to-day management and operational support services across the Directorate.

Currently serving as National Immediate Past President of the Society of Government Meeting Professionals (SGMP), where she created a leadership development training course and has been a member since 1993, Kebe also served as a committee member charged with creating the Certified Government Meeting Professional (CGMP) certification program.

Kebe has received a number of awards and honors for her contributions to the industry, among them, SGMP Sam Gilmer Planner of the Year, SGMP National President’s Award of Merit, and SGMP Chapter Presidents’ Roundtable Leadership Award.

The outgoing CMP Board Chair, Karen M. Gonzales, CMP, Senior Vice President of Membership & Operations for Destination Marketing Association International (DMAI) moves into the position of Immediate Past Chair.

“This past year has been filled with enhancements to the CMP program,” said Gonzales. “Over the past year we have guided the ongoing globalization of the certification, completion of the CMP Census, development of the 9th edition of the CIC Manual, the announcement of the CMP Healthcare subspecialty, and major improvements in the way we engage with the CMP community. Melody takes leadership of the CMP Board at an exciting time for the program, and she has the experience and passion to lead the program into an exceptional future.”

To earn the designation, individuals are tested on the CMP International Standards, the collection of globally relevant best practices and competencies required to be a successful professional in the meetings industry.
