CONVENTION INDUSTRY COUNCIL UNVEILS NEWLY CONSTRUCTED HALL OF LEADERS RECOGNITION PAVILION

MCLEAN, VA – March 2, 2004 - The Convention Industry Council (CIC) unveiled its new Hall of Leaders Recognition Pavilion on February 26, 2004 with Michael Gehrisch, chairman of the board cutting the ribbon Thursday. A celebration was held in the pre-function space around the pavilion in the newly constructed Washington Convention Center. Nearly 25% of all Hall of Leaders inductees were in attendance.

“One of the goals of the Convention Industry Council is to promote and recognize leadership within our industry,” says Mary Power, president of CIC. “The Hall of Leaders is central to that effort.”

The Hall of Leaders program was launched in the early 1980s as a means to honor outstanding leaders and pioneers within the meetings, conventions and exhibitions industry. For over 15 years, inductees were honored with a bronze plaque housed in the old Washington, D.C. convention center.

“With the construction of the new convention center, it seemed appropriate to create a new, updated recognition forum to take the Hall of Leaders into the next century and beyond,” says Gehrisch.

The new, interactive display allows visitors to view videos and presentations about both the economic impact of the meetings, conventions and exhibitions industry as well as its value as a profession. It gives information about the industry, CIC’s member organizations, and, most importantly, about each Hall of Leaders Inductee.

“CIC has honored more than eighty industry leaders so far,” says Power, “Another six will be inducted into the Hall of Leaders on July 26, 2004.”

The Convention Industry Council’s 31 member organizations represent more than 98,000 individuals as well as 15,000 firms and properties involved in the meetings, conventions and exhibitions industry. Formed in 1949 to provide a forum for member organizations seeking to enhance the industry, the CIC facilitates the exchange of information and develops programs to promote professionalism within the industry and educates the public on its profound economic impact. In addition to the Hall of Leaders, the CIC is also responsible for the Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) Program and APEX, the Accepted Practices Exchange. Other programs include Project Attrition, the Prestigious CIC Cup, and the CIC Economic Impact Study.
