CIC Releases Statement in Response to Labor Disputes

McLean, VA – April 1, 2005 – The Convention Industry Council (CIC) released a statement today in response to recent labor disputes between hotels and their union employees in various cities throughout the United States.

“CIC recognizes that legitimate disputes may arise between employers and their employees and believe that each side has the right to express its views and negotiate,” said Michael J. Bandy, president of the Trade Show Exhibitors Association (TSEA) and chairman of the CIC board of directors.

Although CIC understand that unions and hotels have the right to advise the public, including customers, of any disputes, it strongly believes that any such disputes must be resolved through proper negotiations and fair tactics. CIC does not support tactics that include any misrepresentation or attempt to force industry professionals to boycott hotels at which these disputes may arise.

“Secondary boycotts are both unfair and illegal,” commented Mary E. Power, CAE, president and CEO of CIC. “Influencing sponsors and meeting planners to boycott hotels can only damage the great economic impact that the meetings, conventions and exhibitions industry has on a cities economy.”

CIC’s full statement can be found online at www.conventionindustry.org.

With great concern of the impact these disputes may have on the meetings, conventions and exhibitions, CIC urges all industry professionals to review the list of recommendations entitled What to Do Should You be Contacted Regarding Labor Disputes.
