| FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – October 25, 2005 CONTACT: Mary Power, President
McLean, VA – October 25, 2005– On October 14, 2005 over an estimated 36,000 members of the meetings, conventions and exhibitions industry throughout the United States and Canada took part in celebrating the return of APEX Day. While the first annual APEX Day yielded great success in 2004, the event gained even more strength in its second year. Accepted Practices Exchange (APEX), an initiative spearheaded by the Convention Industry Council (CIC), aims to bring the meetings, conventions and exhibitions industry together to reach a common goal of increased efficiency and streamlined processes. APEX Day brings widespread attention to this industry-wide effort. Professionals from all segments of the industry were encouraged to plan and participate in special APEX Day events. As a resource CIC offered recommendations for activities including: publishing articles on APEX in corporate publications, adding the discussion of APEX on staff meeting agendas, as well as linking and promoting APEX on websites. All participants that registered an APEX activity through CIC’s website (www.conventionindustry.org) received an APEX Supporter Logo to include with association materials. Among the various activities that took place on APEX Day was the “Virginia Tech Live Videoconferencing of the APEX Day Celebration”, supported by the Virginia Tech (VT) Graduate School. Taking part in the first video casting to celebrate APEX day, students and faculties from VT’s Introductory Convention and Meeting Management course demonstrated their understanding of APEX. They discussed the benefits and ease of using APEX as they begin to integrate specific APEX tools in their final project. To view the “Virginia Tech Live Videoconferencing of the APEX Day Celebration”, visit CIC’s 2005 APEX Day Supporter Page at http://www.conventionindustry.org/apex/apex_day_supporters_2005.htm. Held at the state-of-the-art videoconferencing facility at the Virginia Tech Graduate Life Center, the program was hosted by industry leader, Professor Howard Feiertag, CMP, CHME, CHA with the assistance of Seungwon “Shawn” Lee, PhD. Candidate. “Specializing in meeting technology, it is such a thrill to be a part of the APEX Day Celebration” explained Shawn. “Applying videoconferencing technology to celebrate APEX Day with future meeting professionals is a new accent and a partial picture of the future meetings industry.” In addition to this unique program, Feiertag has incorporated APEX Tools into classroom for the past 3 years. “There is no question of the fact that when students graduate and enter the field of hospitality, whether as a buyer or supplier, the understanding of APEX will be critical to their successes in the future, as they grow within our industry” comments Feiertag. Many showed their APEX support through their website and publications, others designed additional innovative APEX Day events:
