APEX VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH: ELLEN WILSON & SCOTT WILLIAMSON, CHSP, CMP APEX would not be possible without the dedication and commitment of hundreds of industry volunteers who generously provide their time, knowledge and experience to the initiative. Going above and beyond the call of duty recently were Ellen Wilson and Scott Williamson, CHSP, CMP, co-City Discussion Group (CDG) Leaders in Washington, D.C. Ellen, Key Account Director-Meetings for Six Continents Hotels, and Scott, Director of Washington, D.C. Sales for the Los Angeles Convention & Visitors Bureau, upon committing to being co-CDG Leaders, put together a small committee to plan and implement the CDG. Through their hard work and dedication, this team secured a sponsored ballroom at the Hamilton Crowne Plaza in downtown D.C., recruited a sponsor for a continental breakfast, and worked with the Potomac Chapter of MPI to allow on-line RSVPs. Within one week of sending invitations, over 100 industry members signed up to attend. On August 13, 2002, Ellen and Scott led more than 120 people in a two-hour discussion of APEX and the work of its industry panels. By all accounts, the first Washington, D.C. City Discussion Group was a valuable event for the attendees and an absolute success for its leaders and for APEX. AND, Ellen, Scott and their committee are already making plans for a second CDG in the spring. Many thanks to these dedicated volunteers for their commitment to APEX and the future of the meeting, convention and exhibition industry. Do you know of someone who has gone above and beyond the call of duty for APEX? To nominate a "Volunteer of the Month," send an email with the person's name and an explanation of why you think he or she should be recognized. APEX fundraising efforts continue to be successful. With a goal of $1.9 million, APEX is more than half-way there with a total of $961,425 committed as of September 3, 2002. Since the last APEX E-NEWS, Ungerboeck Systems, Inc. and seeUthere Technologies have joined the growing ranks of APEX supporters. APEX supporters include corporations, organizations and individuals. If your company or organization supports APEX, make sure to let your employees, customers and suppliers know about your commitment. At City Discussion Groups and APEX presentations, attendees are often surprised (pleasantly albeit) to find that their employers, or associations to which they belong, are financially supportive of the initiative. City Discussion Groups (CDG) are a vital part of the development of accepted industry practices for the meeting, convention, and exhibition industry, providing an open forum through which industry members on the local level can participate and be heard. To date, CDGs have been held in Austin (TX), Phoenix (AZ), Lexington (KY), Dallas/Fort Worth (TX), Boston (MA), and Washington, D.C. Upcoming meetings include:

The Terminology Panel is on the home stretch! It will officially release its final report in December 2002. In the interim, it is working to complete its compilation of the many industry-related glossaries and to resolve inconsistencies and out-dated terms. Keeping in mind that this is a WORK IN PROGRESS, extra eyes would be helpful. Most people who have provided comments to date started with "A." Will you please start with "Z?"
