APEX E-NEWS ARCHIVE: Volume II, Issue 1 - January 2003

Please forward this newsletter to others involved in the meeting, convention, & exhibition industry.

The monthly APEX E-News is an effort to provide timely information and updates on the APEX (Accepted Practices Exchange) initiative to all volunteers, funders and general industry members. APEX is an industry-wide initiative that is developing the best accepted practices for the meeting, convention and exhibition industry with the goal of streamlining the way the industry does business.

I. HELP NEEDED - Your Opportunity to Contribute to the Contracts Panel

The APEX Contracts Panel is beginning its work. This panel has been charged with reviewing all aspects of industry contracts and developing contract guidelines and, where appropriate, acceptable contract language. Additionally, the panel will develop an outline to format industry contracts. The first step in its research is to collect as many examples of industry contracts as possible.

To contribute an example of a good contract, please send your document (with no specific company names or details included) via email (preferred) to jjones@conventionindustry.org. Or mail a hard copy to: Juli Jones, Convention Industry Council, 8201 Greensboro Drive, Suite 300, McLean, VA 22102.

The deadline for submission is February 15, 2003. Please be aware that no materials submitted will be returned.

II. CITY DISCUSSION GROUPS

City Discussion Groups (CDG) are a vital part of the development of accepted industry practices for the meeting, convention and exhibition industry, providing an open forum through which industry members on the local level can participate and be heard.

CDG Leaders are currently scheduling their 2003 meetings. Look for an updated calendar soon!

Would YOU like to be a CDG Leader? Call Juli Jones at (703) 610-0273 for more information.

III. APEX VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH - APEX Legal Advisory Council

Recent months have demonstrated that outstanding volunteer work is often done in teams. This month is no different. Three volunteers have provided outstanding service to the APEX initiative.

The three-member Legal Advisory Council (LAC) was formed in October 2002 and is charged with reviewing all APEX panel recommendations, preliminary and final, providing input and suggestions on any perceived legal challenges. In just 60 days, this group thoroughly reviewed every single entry in the APEX Glossary that has been developed by the Terminology Panel. This is no small task -- there are more than 2,600 entries!

For their dedication and hard work, the volunteers of the month for January 2003 are:

  • Lisa M. Sommer Devlin, Esq.
  • James M. "Jim" Goldberg, Esq.
  • Mark Roysner, Esq.

Do you know of someone who has gone above and beyond the call of duty for APEX? To nominate a "Volunteer of the Month," email jjones@conventionindustry.org with the person's name and an explanation of why you think he or she should be recognized.
