Please forward this newsletter to others involved in the meeting, convention, & exhibition industry.

The monthly APEX E-News is an effort to provide timely information and updates on the APEX (Accepted Practices Exchange) initiative to all volunteers, funders and general industry members. APEX is an industry-wide initiative that is developing the best accepted practices for the meeting, convention and exhibition industry with the goal of streamlining the way the industry does business.

I. HELP NEEDED - Provide Feedback to the Resumes and Work Orders Panel - The Deadline is March 15!

The review period for the Preliminary Report of the Resumes & Work Orders Panel will end on March 15, 2003. Now is the time for you and your colleagues to provide feedback and suggestions on this area of industry accepted practices. The report is available, and comments can be submitted, online at: www.conventionindustry.org/apex/Panels/RWO_Prelim_Report.htm

II. APEX PARTICIPATION EARNS POINTS FOR CMP CERTIFICATION

Effective January 1, 2003, participation in APEX activities can earn industry members points toward CMP (Certified Meeting Professional) certification and recertification. The following point system applies:

  • APEX Ambassador - 2 points
  • APEX Commissioner - 4 points
  • Panel/Committee Chair - 4 points
  • Panel/Committee Member - 3 points
  • City Discussion Group Leader - 2 points
  • City Discussion Group Participant - 1 point

More details on claiming points are available in the 2003 CMP Recertification Application (available online) and the 2003-2005 CMP Candidate Handbook (to be published in March 2003). See www.conventionindustry.org for all the details.

III. CITY DISCUSSION GROUPS - HIGHLIGHTS FROM SAN DIEGO

The first San Diego, California APEX City Discussion Group (CDG) was held on November 20, 2002. CDGs, which are taking place throughout the U.S. and Canada, promote an environment similar to a "town hall" meeting in which industry members convene to openly and constructively discuss preliminary documents developed by the APEX panels. They are a vital part of the development of accepted practices in the meeting, convention and exhibition industry.

Held at the Hilton San Diego, the meeting was facilitated by:

  • Angela Drees, Meeting Sites Pro, Inc.
  • Terri Breining, CMP, CMM, president of Concepts Worldwide and APEX Commissioner for the "Meeting Management" industry segment
  • Dr. Vinod Sasidharan, professor of Hospitality and Tourism Management at the San Diego State University

Students from the Hospitality and Tourism Management program at SDSU, and more than 20 industry leaders, met to review and critique the Preliminary Report of the Resumes & Work Orders Panel. Below is a picture of the San Diego State University students who participated.

Stay tuned for more CDG dates and locations! Or visit www.conventionindustry.org/apex/cdg.htm.

Thanks to Carl Winston, program director at SDSU, for his contribution to this article! (If you would like to submit material for inclusion in this publication, please email to ccote@conventionindustry.org).

IV. APEX VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH - JACKIE JUNGEMANN, CMP

With the dedication of many volunteers, APEX continues to make tremendous headway toward its goals.

Philip Dormer Stanhope, a British statesman in the 18th century said, "We are hardly ever grateful for a fine clock or watch when it goes right, and we pay attention to it only when it falters, for then we are caught by surprise. It ought to be the other way about." Taking his advice, a genuine and hearty "thank you" goes to Jackie Jungemann, CMP for contributing her experience, knowledge, effort and enthusiasm to the APEX initiative as the Leader of the Austin, Texas City Discussion Group.

In February, Jackie (supported by a terrific team of local colleagues) led her second CDG in Austin. She has consistently gone above and beyond for the initiative and fulfilled her commitment to lead two CDGs in twelve months (the first was in May 2002). Below is a picture of Jackie and her team (Jackie is in the middle).

Do you know someone who has gone above and beyond the call of duty for APEX? To nominate a "Volunteer of the Month," email ccote@conventionindustry.org with the person's name and an explanation of why you think he or she should be recognized.
