I. APEX INDUSTRY GLOSSARY EXPANDED The Convention Industry Council’s (CIC) Board of Directors approved the addition of 194 new terms to the APEX Industry Glossary, bringing the total number of entries to 3,974. The Glossary has served as the foundation of the meetings, conventions and exhibitions industry’s language since its original launch in November 2003. “This updating process demonstrates that APEX is a living initiative that will ensure ongoing relevancy to the industry and its members,” stated Mickey Schaefer, CAE, APEX Commission Chair and vice president of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Each addition is a result of industry members from around the world reviewing the Glossary and submitting recommendations for new entries. Comments were also received from industry professionals suggesting the editing of definitions for existing entries. New entries include many helpful travel-related terms, provided by the National Business Travel Association, and economic impact-related terms, provided by the International Association of Convention and Visitor Bureaus’ ExPact Study. TECHNOLOGY-SPECIFIC NEWSLETTER LAUNCHING IN 2005 The APEX Technology Advisory Council (TAC) is charged with developing and defining data specifications for each area for which APEX accepted practices are developed. “The puzzle we are solving is how to send APEX-based documents between organizations that utilize different operating systems and applications with dissimilar field descriptions,” said EJ Siwek, CMP, president of FLASHpoint Technologies, LLC and chairman of the APEX TAC. “These transmissions will provide dynamic data that can be easily exchanged between systems, and the systems need to be ready to send and receive that data.” The TAC is currently working on translating the accepted practices established by APEX panels into implementable formats including interactive templates, data definitions, and XML (eXtensible Markup Language) schema. Upon completion, the industry will have tools to ensure that the sharing and exchange of data will be smooth and seamless. To keep industry professionals and interested technologists informed of the TAC’s progress, the APEX Technology E-Newsletter will be launched in 2005. You can subscribe to this newsletter by sending an email with “ADD” in the subject line to EJ Siwek, CMP. The message body should include the subscribers name, title, employer and mailing address.
