| Emeritus CMPs J. David von Gunten In my ten years of being a Certified Meeting Professional, I have found this designation to be an invaluable tool. First, when discussing or negotiating with a vendor, be it a convention bureau, convention hotel, airline, or ground operator, my peers recognize my expertise and experience. Secondly, in negotiating meeting contracts, CMP identity carries authority and relevance in the meetings market place. Living in Fort Wayne, Indiana, there were not enough individuals preparing for the CMP exam to warrant a study group so I embarked on an arduous self-study program. Having no idea in 1995 what types of questions might be asked or what facets of the meeting planning might be emphasized. I prepared thoroughly in all areas of the recommended texts, glossaries, etc. This proved to my benefit and I was surprised at my retention level as different areas of meeting planning were confronted in later years. Still after driving to Chicago to take the exam, I left with fear and trepidation, wondering if I had passed. In the religious meeting planning field, so many individuals are forced to wear a “meeting hat” and come in to these complex responsibilities with no experience. After “learning” for a number of years from the “school of hard knocks” in the religious market, I saw the value of pursuing the CMP designation and it greatly enhanced my experience and credibility within the industry. When the CMP designation follows a person’s name on a business letter or business card, the recipient is aware of broad professionalism and a desire for excellence in the presenter’s field of responsibility. I have carried the Certified Meeting Professional designation with
pride and look forward to continuing as a CMP Emeritus in my retirement
years and as I continue in the meetings industry on a part-time basis.
CMP is indeed the badge of honor for anyone pursuing a meetings career
and it is well worth the study effort achieve this professional designation.
