Emeritus CMPs

Bobbie Barnes, CMP
Markham, IL

I am writing to request consideration of my application for “Emeritus Status” in the Society of Government Meeting Planners. I recently learned of this opportunity when I contacted the National Headquarters to advise them that due to my retirement I would not be renewing my membership. When I contacted the Convention Industry Council to advise them that I was retiring, one of the council members recommended that I apply for “Emeritus” status. Based on my understanding, this status has no expiration date and I would not be required to pay future membership dues. The Council member forwarded a copy of the guidelines and requirements for Emeritus designation. After determining that I am indeed eligible, I am hereby submitting a formal application.

I have been a member of the Society of Government Meeting Professionals in a good standing for over twenty years and received my Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) designation in January 1997. I am proud to share that I was one of the first persons to earn this designation in the Chicago Region V, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. I have been actively and meaningfully involved in the Chicago Chapter for over a decade. I meet the age requirement of over 59 years of age and based on my experience and commitment, I believe that I qualify for this important status.

My CMP designation has helped tremendously in both my professional and personal life. Through active involvement and continuing education I have increased my skill in organizing, negotiating, evaluating and securing meeting related space and services. I have and continue to be called upon by colleagues, my sorority and other organizations to provide consultation on issues important to site selections and meeting facilitation. I have greatly benefited from the networking and relationships afforded to members of the Society. I believe that even in retirement I can continue to contribute wisdom accumulated through experience that includes both successes and failures. Further, I believe that if you set a personal achievement goal and achieve it, you have earned the privileges assigned to that goal.

Over the years I have attended the SGMP National Conferences, Certified Meeting Planner conclaves and workshops. I have used acquired knowledge to refine my skills and teach others. I have served as chapter secretary, vice president and president and special events coordinator for many special events for the Chicago Chapter, including a highly successful membership event entitled “Networking on the Lake” which resulted in the addition of seven new members.

Beyond the professional benefits, I am a life-long learner and I personally enjoy opportunities to continue learning and growing. The SGMP network of colleagues provides a wealth of resources that I can share whenever the opportunity presents. I want to continue being a part of this dynamic organization and respectfully request a positive consideration of my application. I have attached supporting documentation and I welcome an opportunity to provide more information.
