ESSAY ON CMP
(Essay for Emeritus Status)

It was my privilege to be one of the original founders of the Certified Meeting Professional certification program. What a stimulating venture it was to participate from concept…through development…to fruition. It was truly a challenging journey.

In the process, the interaction with my peers was most rewarding as we endeavored to bring about a certification that would be a mark of excellence recognized by one and all within the meetings industry.

Throughout the extensive and sometimes exhausting procedure, I expanded my insights as we joined in healthy debates hammering out how best to certify competence in the meetings profession.

Perhaps one of the greatest challenges was identifying the vast body of knowledge that exists in the world today on the subject of meeting management. The research and vigorous screening required to produce a valid examination vastly increased my personal expertise in the field and hence contributed to my own professionalism. Through all the process and endless meetings, it was an expansive learning experience as we explored the various disciplines within the industry.

It has been a thrill to see those three initials, CMP become the benchmark of accomplishment in our field. They have raised the industry standards and brought about an increasing respect for those involved in the profession.

In my role as the executive director and CEO of the Religious Conference Management Association, the CMP designation has added to my own stature as I see to lead the members of our society to ever expand their knowledge and skills. The CMP has been an invaluable tool which RCMA has been able to utilize in challenging its members to increase their level of competence through preparing for, securing and maintaining this professional designation.

As a staunch believer in certification, it has been a distinct honor to be among those who hold the CMP credential. It truly sets apart those who are recognized as being at the forefront of the industry.
