| CMP EMERITUS STATUS REQUESTED Having the”CMP” designation after my signature has been the greatest achievement of my career. I have retired but find that those initials still give me confidence in myself and gives confidence in others that I can do my job. When I received my certification, I was the only person in my area that had the distinction of passing the exam and becoming certified. It opened so many doors to me professionally and socially. Becoming a CMP was not easy as I, as well as my study group, had to rely on our experiences to answer the exam questions. I still remember driving 65 miles one-way to the study group after working all day where we asked each other questions, studied the book, took mock exams, got frustrated with ourselves, but made many close relationships with each other. We were all pulling for each other when we took the real exam – we all passed it. What a celebration that was!! It was very hard for me to go back to studying as I had been out of school a long time but with the help of my classmates, I was able to succeed. My husband was pushing me at home to succeed which did not hurt either. In my work as a conference coordinator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Training Classes, becoming a CMP gave me a lot of respect. I booked classes all over the United States as well as Europe. I did all aspects of meeting planning including choosing the sites, arrangements for food, lodging, and meeting space, transportation, audio-visual equipment, registration, budgets, etc. Now that I have retired, I have used my knowledge as a CMP to start a humane society for the Tennessee county in which I live. The Society has been in operation for over a year and a half and is the first on e to succeed – four others have never made a year. We do many fund raisers during the year as well as write grant proposals for spay/neuter programs and building programs. I help out with the PMPN group whenever they have a medical program in my area. The doctors are very impressed with the CMP designation. When I became a CMP, I was able to increase my knowledge of meeting planning, leadership, negotiations, registrations, budgeting, food service, dealing with mishaps, computer technology, and meeting technology. I am still a member of the SGMP organization as a retiree and am involved with membership retention at the national level. Over my thirty-one years as a meeting planner, the hard work in becoming
a CMP was one of my greatest career achievements. I encourage others
to seek the certification as you cannot imagine the “high”
you will get when you finally get those famous initials after your name.
It is very hard to describe, but it is a wonderful feeling – you
feel you can do anything after you get the CMP designation.
