How to Become A CMP

  1. Visit the Convention Industry Council website www.conventionindustry.org or
  2. Order the CMP Candidate Handbook for $45 US + s/h.
  3. Complete the CMP Application and return it to the CIC office by the application deadline, and include the $175 US submission fee. The $175 US submission fee is a nonrefundable fee.
  4. Applicants can pay the application submission fee on-line with a credit card. The advantage of doing so is that the applicant has up to 7 (seven) calendar days from the initial application submission deadline to mail the completed application and all required documentation without incurring a late fee. The $175 US submission fee is a nonrefundable fee. If an applicant submits credit card information on-line and either neglects to complete the process by submitting the actual application by mail or cannot earn 90 points or more on the application, the fee paid on-line will not be refunded.
  5. An Application Submission Late Fees for a one-week extension of the published deadline is available on-line. Applications received by CIC after the original deadline must be submitted with a $75 US late fee (total submission fee of $250 US).
  6. Following notification of successful application, CMP candidates may register for the CMP examination by returning a completed registration form and $375 US fee for the North American examination or $450 US for the International examination to the CIC office before the examination registration deadline.
  7. Successfully complete the CMP Examination.

The CMP Process

  • Applicants should complete the official application included in the Candidate Handbook provided by CIC upon order and payment of $45 US + s/h. The purchase record enables CIC to notify potential applicants of subsequent changes in requirements.
  • The completed application form and application submission fee of $175 US should be submitted to the CIC office by the dates noted on the Application Deadlines & Exam Dates Schedule.
  • Following each application deadline, all applications are submitted to the CMP Board for review and verification of points indicated. A minimum of 90 points is required to be approved for the examination.
  • Applicants will be notified by e-mail by the CMP Board of their eligibility to take the exam approximately one month prior to the next scheduled Examination Registration Deadline.
  • Application results appeals must be submitted in writing by the applicant within 14 days of notification of application results. Appeals should be directed to the CMP Board at the Convention Industry Council address.
  • To confirm seating for the exam, applicants must submit to CIC the exam fee of $375 US for the North American examination or $450 US for the International examination. Candidates will also indicate their choice of a test site by the exam registration deadline.
  • Approximately three weeks before the exam date applicants will be sent written confirmation of the final exam arrangements including site, room location, and time of exam.
  • Within 60 days after the exam, candidates will be notified of their exam results by the CMP Testing Agency, the Chauncey Group International. A test report indicating areas of strength and weakness is provided to failing candidates.
  • Test results appeals must be submitted in writing by the candidate within 30 days of notification of exam results. Appeals should be directed to the CMP Board at the Convention Industry Council address.
